The Northwest Insurance Council and Insurance Information Institute have put out their latest report on insurance in Washington state. The 49-page report contains a lot of data, including:
-The insurance industry provides nearly 51,000 jobs in Washington state (2007 numbers), with about a $3.2 billion payroll.
-They paid $415 million in premium taxes in 2007.
-Premiums by property/casualty companies totaled $9.1 billion in 2008. Life/health companies' premiums were slightly higher: $10.7 billion.
The report includes state-by-state comparisons of taxes, number of companies, and natural disaster data. For example, Washington in 2008 had the seventh-highest number of acres burned by wildfires.
On the plus side, we're quite low in terms of tornadoes.
(Not interested in Washington state data? There are similar reports for some other states.)
